So it seems. The Australians have their own magpies which are a completely different and bigger species to the ones that I'm familiar with.

Australian magpies are the largest member of the butcherbird family. They are all territorial during their breeding season but the magpie takes it to heart and some go utterly overboard.
There’s a couple in my town that have begun to swoop and one in particular is enjoying smack ing the shit out of us cyclists. But, if you are properly set-up, he can’t do much harm.
However, many people overreact in their fear response and sadly that’s what happened here.
Having also been swooped by a Grey Butcherbird and a Perigrine Falcon...the Australian Magpie is nothing.
